Abstract

The article reviews *Monuments and Identities in the Caucasus: Karabagh, Nakhichevan and Azerbaijan in Contemporary Geopolitical Conflict* (2024), a multidisciplinary volume examining the systematic destruction and appropriation of Armenian cultural heritage in Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh), Nakhichevan, and Azerbaijan since the 1990s, with intensified activity after the 2020 war. The book combines historical, archaeological, and architectural analyses with studies of Azerbaijani nationalism and its ideological frameworks that underpin cultural erasure. It documents the stages and mechanisms of Armenian monument destruction and rebranding, supported by empirical evidence including satellite imagery and eyewitness accounts, while also addressing international legal perspectives on heritage protection. The volume serves as a significant scholarly resource on cultural heritage in conflict zones, highlighting how monument destruction functions as a political tool to reshape historical memory and identity claims in the South Caucasus.
