Abstract
The article focuses on the implications of the U.S. Supreme Court's recent decision banning the use of race in undergraduate admissions, which equity advocates view as a significant setback for increasing minority representation in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields. While the ruling ends affirmative action at highly selective universities, advocates highlight a passage allowing consideration of a student's race-related experiences in personal essays as a potential alternative to promote diversity. Experts emphasize the need for admissions processes to assess applicants holistically, including resilience and background, and stress the importance of supporting admitted minority students to improve retention. University leaders and policymakers are seeking new strategies and guidance, including forthcoming federal initiatives, to maintain inclusive educational opportunities despite the ruling.
