Abstract

This article discusses the application of practice theory in analyzing conflict management in Southeast Asia and South America. The author focuses on two regional organizations, ASEAN and OAS, and examines how they dealt with low-intensity conflicts between member states. The author argues that these organizations have distinct diplomatic customs and a community of practitioners that contribute to regional conflict management. The article highlights the importance of habitual dispositions and shared knowledge among practitioners in shaping diplomatic practices. However, it also raises questions about the uncritical application of these habitual dispositions and the potential influence of power dynamics within the community of practice. The author provides examples of Indonesia's leadership role in resolving conflicts within ASEAN and Brazil's brokerage in the Cenepa conflict. Overall, the article offers insights into the role of practice theory in understanding regional conflict management. [Extracted from the article]
