Abstract

This article focuses on the role of the parliamentary press in shaping Oliver Cromwell’s heroic military image during the English Civil War, based on an analysis of contemporary pamphlets and newsbooks. It identifies three phases of press coverage aligned with the war’s campaigning seasons, highlighting Cromwell’s close ties to the Independent leadership at Westminster, who skillfully manipulated print media to bolster his reputation. The article demonstrates how favorable press portrayals supported Cromwell’s military and political advancement, contributing to troop morale, recruitment, and parliamentary support, while also navigating factional conflicts and censorship. Cromwell’s cultivated public image as a competent and valiant commander helped establish his status as a parliamentary hero and laid the groundwork for his later role as lord protector.
