Abstract
The article discusses Russia's critical role in the global clean energy transition, highlighting the paradox that while the country is a major contributor to fossil fuel markets, it is also essential for the shift towards renewable energy sources. Following its invasion of Ukraine, Russia's energy policies have inadvertently accelerated Europe's investment in renewables and nuclear power, reducing reliance on Russian gas. However, Russia remains a dominant player in nuclear energy and critical minerals necessary for the energy transition, complicating Western efforts to sanction its energy sector. The article emphasizes the challenges policymakers face in balancing the need to reduce dependence on Russian energy while advancing the transition to a carbon-free power sector.
