Abstract
The article focuses on the uncertainty surrounding a historic agreement for Britain to transfer control of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, a former colony, while allowing the US military base on Diego Garcia to remain. After nearly two years of negotiations culminating in an October agreement, Mauritius's newly elected Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam expressed reservations and issued counterproposals, delaying finalization. The British government remains confident in the deal, which both countries agreed would secure the military base "well into the next century." US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has urged Mauritius to finalize the treaty before the incoming US administration takes office, while Mauritian officials emphasize concerns over compensation and sovereignty claims.
