Abstract
The article focuses on calls by the U.S. Energy Secretary and Congressman Mike Lawler to restart the Indian Point nuclear plant north of New York City, which was closed in 2021, to meet rising power demand. While some industry leaders and companies favor reviving shuttered nuclear plants for carbon-free energy, the plant’s owner, Holtec International, is decommissioning Indian Point and estimates a restart would cost $10–12 billion and take about five years. New York Governor Kathy Hochul supports expanding nuclear power upstate but opposes reopening Indian Point, and local and state support for its revival is currently lacking.
