Abstract

The article examines how President el-Sisi's urban renewal campaign in Cairo has demolished historic neighborhoods and informal settlements to build luxury developments, worsening the affordable housing crisis despite a surplus of vacant homes. Topics include the mismatch between luxury construction and low-income demand, the destruction of green space and eviction of millions; and the underpopulated New Administrative Capital megaproject.
