Abstract

The article focuses on Gayane Umerova’s leadership in revitalizing Uzbekistan’s cultural presence both domestically and internationally. As commissioner of the Uzbekistan Pavilion at the Venice Biennale and chairperson of key cultural institutions, she advances projects that integrate Uzbekistan’s heritage with contemporary art, such as the Centre for Contemporary Arts in Tashkent and the Bukhara Biennial. Umerova’s initiatives also address pressing national issues, exemplified by the Aral Culture Summit tackling the Aral Sea’s ecological crisis through interdisciplinary collaboration. Her work reflects a strategic effort to reshape Uzbekistan’s post-Soviet identity by fostering a creative economy and engaging younger generations in cultural development.
