Abstract

A crisis of "epic proportions" is unfolding in Sudan's Darfur region, with intensifying clashes hindering efforts to deliver life-saving aid. The UN warns that time is running out to prevent starvation, as approximately 17.7 million people are facing "acute" levels of food insecurity. Limited access to vulnerable communities and ongoing fighting between rival militaries exacerbate the crisis. Aid convoys have been halted, and there are concerns about widespread starvation and death if assistance does not reach the affected areas soon. The situation is particularly dire for children, with increasing reports of sexual violence and limited access to education and healthcare. Médecins sans Frontières (MSF) has treated over 100 war-wounded patients and warns of a catastrophic malnutrition crisis in Zamzam camp, where 30% of children and 33% of pregnant and breastfeeding women are suffering from acute malnutrition. The situation is expected to deteriorate further with the approaching rainy season. The UN and other aid agencies are facing challenges in providing assistance due to restrictions on humanitarian access. The Sudanese government denies claims of famine but acknowledges the need to reach conflict-affected people with aid. Estonia has allocated funds to support relief efforts in Sudan.
