Abstract
This article examines the dynamics of Zimbabwe's liberation war (1966–1979) in the rural Zaka District of Masvingo province, focusing on how guerrilla violence shaped relations between guerrillas, their aides (mujibhas and chimbwidos), and peasants. It highlights the complex interplay of power, coercion, and cooperation, noting that accusations of "vatengesi" (traitors) were often used to settle personal scores, leading to brutal reprisals by guerrillas and complicating civilian loyalties. The study also details the harsh tactics employed by both the Rhodesian Security Forces and guerrillas, including the use of protected villages, auxiliary forces, and collective punishments, which intensified civilian suffering and shaped the war’s social order. Ultimately, the article argues that guerrilla violence was central to the conduct of the war and influenced the intricate and often contradictory relationships between combatants and rural communities.
