Abstract

The article focuses on George Clinton's pivotal role as governor of New York in managing the peaceful British evacuation of New York City on November 25, 1783, known as Evacuation Day, and the subsequent reintegration of the city into the new state. Clinton leveraged personal relationships, political coalition-building, and his military authority to unify a divided population, oversee the transition of power, and maintain order amid tensions between Loyalists and revolutionaries. His collaboration with British commander Sir Guy Carleton and American leaders, including General George Washington, was crucial in ensuring a largely peaceful transfer of control despite ongoing local conflicts and Loyalist displacement. The article argues that Clinton's leadership during this period was instrumental in shaping New York's postwar political stability and state-building efforts.
