Abstract

Two United Nations peacekeepers were among the more than 50 people killed in three days of violence in South Sudan's Abyei region. The fighting involved soldiers from Pakistan and Ghana, and there are ongoing intercommunal clashes in the area. Abyei has been a disputed region since South Sudan gained independence from Sudan in 2011, and a promised referendum to determine ownership has not yet taken place. The situation has been further complicated by inter-ethnic fighting and a renewed conflict in Sudan. The Norwegian, UK, and US embassies have called for urgent action to end the conflict.
