Abstract

Tom McInally's book, "Strachan of the Mearns: Seventeenth-Century Orientalist," provides a comprehensive account of George Strachan, a Scottish scholar and traveler who explored the Islamic world in the 17th century. Strachan, born into a Catholic gentry family, studied and taught in France before being exiled from Scotland. He traveled to Jerusalem, Constantinople, and Aleppo, where he became a personal physician to the Bedouin Emir Feyyād Abū Rīsha. Strachan collected important Islamic manuscripts and continued his travels to Persia, India, and Nepal. McInally's research sheds light on Strachan's life and contributions to scholarship, making this book a valuable resource for understanding early modern global interaction and Anglophone travel in the Islamic world.
