Abstract

The article focuses on the widespread revolutionary uprisings across Europe in 1848, a period known as the Springtime of Peoples, when demands for liberal reforms, democracy, and national self-determination challenged existing monarchical and absolutist regimes. It details key events in various regions, including Italy’s failed bid for independence from Austria, France’s February Revolution that ended the monarchy and established a republic, and the German states’ March Revolution which sought unity but ultimately faltered due to internal divisions. Other notable developments include Austria’s suppression of Hungarian demands despite initial concessions, Denmark’s peaceful transition from absolutism to constitutional monarchy under King Frederick VII, and the Netherlands’ successful constitutional reforms led by King William II. The article also covers smaller or unsuccessful uprisings in Poland, Belgium, Ireland, and Sweden, illustrating the diverse outcomes of this continental wave of political and social upheaval.
