Abstract

The article focuses on the British Computer Society's (BCS) engagement with the UK's major political parties during their conference season to discuss key technology issues. BCS representatives met with senior politicians from the Liberal Democrats, Conservative, and Labour parties to address topics including artificial intelligence (AI) regulation, digital skills development, diversity and inclusion in tech, and the engineering skills gap related to achieving Net Zero. Notably, BCS participated in a Labour roundtable on closing the diversity gap in AI, highlighting challenges such as low female participation in computing and digital exclusion. Across parties, discussions emphasized the importance of ethical tech professionals, government support for skills training, and the potential of AI to drive economic growth and public benefit.
