Abstract

The article focuses on the representation, manifestation, meaning, and significance of suffering in selected poems from the Namibian anthology *My Heart in Your Hands* (Iizyenda & Kinahan, 2000). Using Trauma Theory alongside Realism and Resilience Theory, the study analyzes various forms of suffering depicted in the poetry, including domestic abuse, despair, grief/loss, poverty, unrequited love, oppression, illness, substance abuse, and motherhood. It highlights how these poems authentically portray the postcolonial realities of Namibian society, emphasizing the psychological and social impacts of suffering, the ethical imperative of empathetic engagement, and the emergence of resilience through trauma. The work underscores suffering as a multifaceted human experience shaped by socio-economic conditions, interpersonal relationships, and cultural contexts, contributing to a deeper understanding of Namibian lived experiences.
