Abstract

This article examines the formation and dynamics of an "unlikely feminist coalition" between secularist and Islamist women's rights organizations in post-revolution Tunisia, focusing on the League of Tunisian Women Voters (LET) and Tunisian Women (Tounissiet). Despite deep ideological divisions, these groups cooperated briefly in 2018 to advance women's political empowerment by addressing common tasks such as combating gender-based violence and promoting electoral gender quotas, motivated by shared feminist identities, common grievances, and fears of backsliding on women's rights amid political threats. The coalition ultimately dissolved due to intensified political polarization, particularly over inheritance law reform, and the high costs of cross-ideological collaboration. The study highlights how shared feminist concerns can bridge ideological divides and calls for further research on conservative-liberal feminist coalitions in Tunisia and the broader Middle East and North Africa region.
