Abstract
The article focuses on the recently announced Canada-India uranium deal valued at nearly $2.8 billion, highlighting concerns about its implications for nuclear nonproliferation and regional stability. India, a non-signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and the Fissile Material Cutoff Treaty (FMCT), has a history of diverting civilian nuclear material for weapons use, documented security lapses, and proliferation-related sanctions by the United States. Critics argue that the deal risks enabling India to increase its fissile material production for military purposes, undermining international arms control regimes and potentially fueling a regional arms race, particularly with Pakistan. The article calls for stringent security assurances, verifiable safeguards, and enforceable conditions, such as a "kill switch," to prevent nuclear testing or weaponization, emphasizing that without such measures, the agreement could compromise global nonproliferation efforts and regional security.
