Abstract

President Joseph Bokai of Liberia has signed an executive order to establish a war crimes court in response to the country's civil wars from 1989 to 2003. The civil wars resulted in the deaths of over 250,000 people and widespread sexual violence and torture. The court aims to hold the main perpetrators of violence accountable and restore justice and order in the country. Previous presidents had ignored pleas to prosecute war leaders, citing a lack of resources. Ad hoc war crime tribunals, such as those in Rwanda, the former Yugoslavia, and Sierra Leone, have been established by the United Nations to address human rights violations. The establishment of special courts in Liberia and The Gambia is currently being pursued to prosecute those responsible for war crimes and restore justice and peace. [Extracted from the article]
