Abstract
The article discusses the nomination of Neil Shubin, an evolutionary biologist known for his discovery of a significant fish fossil, to lead the U.S. National Academy of Sciences (NAS) amid organizational challenges. Shubin, currently an associate dean at the University of Chicago, is set to take over in 2024 as NAS faces budget deficits and potential job cuts due to decreased revenue from the National Research Council (NRC). The article highlights recent criticisms of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) regarding its diversity initiatives and changes in report language. Shubin's nomination is expected to be ratified by NAS members later this year. [Extracted from the article]
