Abstract
The article explains the efforts of the Confederacy to rebuild Charleston, South Carolina following a fire that damaged the city during the civil war in 1861. It informs about the decision of the Confederate government to make an exception for the city of secession. It shows the collective state action, including companies, religious congregations, individual citizens, soldiers, regiments and African Americans, to donate to Charleston as evidence of nationalism and loyalty to the Confederacy.
