Abstract

The article explores the 1866 stage adaptation Uncas, or Last of the Mohicans of James Fenimore Cooper's 1826 novel, examining how the play altered the novel's plot, characters, and themes for mid-nineteenth-century British theatre audiences. Topics include the spectacle and staging innovations used in the Pavilion Theatre; the changes to Cooper's story, including a "happy" ending and simplified portrayal of characters; and the reception and popularity of the play among contemporary audiences.
