Abstract
The article discusses the withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), which they announced on January 28th, citing the bloc as a threat to member states. The military regimes in these countries, which have faced jihadist violence and poverty, have had strained relations with ECOWAS since their respective coups. ECOWAS has expressed its commitment to negotiating a resolution but has not received formal notification of the withdrawal. The three nations, founding members of ECOWAS, criticized the bloc for its sanctions and alleged failure to assist in combating jihadist threats, claiming that ECOWAS has deviated from its founding principles under foreign influence.
