Abstract

The article focuses on Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s successful gamble in calling a snap election, which resulted in a historic landslide victory for her Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), securing a two-thirds supermajority in the House of Representatives. This outcome revitalizes the long-dominant LDP after previous setbacks and grants Takaichi significant control over Japan’s legislative agenda, including a more assertive stance toward China and economic measures addressing inflation. The election highlighted growing political engagement among young voters, who were drawn to Takaichi’s populist, “Japan first” approach, contrasting with the weak performance of the opposition Centrist Reform Alliance (CRA). However, economists express concern over Takaichi’s plan to suspend the consumption tax on food, warning it could worsen Japan’s fiscal health and inflation. The durability of Takaichi’s popularity and the impact of her economic policies remain uncertain. [Extracted from the article]
