Abstract
This article focuses on the growing public health challenge of diabetes in Liberia, highlighting significant gaps in prevention, management, and care within the country’s health system. It notes that diabetes care in Liberia is currently limited to acute complication management, with inadequate access to medications, trained healthcare providers, and diabetes-specific guidelines, compounded by widespread food insecurity among patients. Drawing on regional studies from sub-Saharan Africa, the article emphasizes the fragmentation of health services and the burden placed on individuals and families. It concludes with policy recommendations for Liberian health authorities, including enhanced diabetes screening, education, specialist training, subsidized medications, and long-term strategies addressing food security and community-based care to improve outcomes for people living with diabetes.
