Abstract

Vital Kamerhe, the economy minister of the outgoing government, was elected as the head of the national assembly in the Democratic Republic of Congo on May 22nd. This came shortly after an attack on his home, which officials believe was an attempted coup. Kamerhe, who previously held the same position from 2006 to 2009, is a former ally of President Felix Tshisekedi. His election is expected to help establish a new government, which has been delayed for over five months since the elections. The country is currently facing challenges such as high poverty and rebellion in the east. [Extracted from the article]
