Abstract
The article focuses on the economic collapse of Venezuela from 2012 to 2020, as analyzed in the book "The Collapse of Venezuela: Scorched Earth Politics and Economic Decline" by Francisco Rodriguez. The author, a political economist, attributes the severe decline in per capita income and mass emigration not primarily to bad economic policies or corruption, but to the concentration of power in the executive branch and the stringent economic sanctions imposed by the Trump administration. Rodriguez criticizes the radical elements within the Venezuelan opposition for their role in advocating for these sanctions, which he argues exacerbated the country's plight without achieving regime change. He suggests that institutional reforms are necessary to foster moderate political behavior and facilitate peaceful transitions of power. [Extracted from the article]
