Abstract
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu have agreed to establish a "core group" to enhance their countries' relations, according to India's Ministry of External Affairs. The leaders met in the UAE during the COP28 Summit to address tensions over the presence of Indian military personnel in the Maldives. The Maldivian president's party has welcomed Chinese loans and called for the removal of Indian troops from the island. The Maldives, a tourist destination and a frontline state in terms of climate change, is caught in a struggle for influence between India and China. Both countries have invested heavily in the Maldives' infrastructure and extended loans to the nation. Approximately 70 Indian military personnel are stationed in the Maldives to operate radar stations, surveillance aircraft, and patrol warships. While the Maldivian president appreciates the role of Indian military personnel, he has urged them to leave the island. [Extracted from the article]
