Abstract
The article focuses on the national-security scandal known as "Signalgate," in which senior Trump administration officials, including Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and National Security Adviser Michael Waltz, used the private messaging app Signal to discuss sensitive military operations, specifically U.S. airstrikes against Houthi targets in Yemen. Despite the clear operational security risks and the release of classified-level information, no serious consequences were imposed on those involved, contrasting sharply with the strict enforcement of the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) for lower-ranking service members. The Department of Defense inspector general’s report acknowledged the security breach but concluded that Hegseth was not technically in violation due to his authority to classify information, though he did violate rules against using private apps for official business. The scandal exposed significant lapses in digital security practices at the highest levels of government and prompted public and congressional concern, yet accountability within the administration remained limited.
