Abstract

This article investigates food security initiatives and actors within a rural, remote northern Canadian community—Prince George, British Columbia—highlighting challenges and opportunities relevant to similar contexts globally. It identifies key issues including reliance on external food sources, fragmented efforts among diverse local actors (government, NGOs, producers, researchers), limited infrastructure, and the need for culturally inclusive approaches that respect Indigenous food sovereignty and community diversity. The study emphasizes the importance of local land stewardship, education for both producers and consumers, enhanced collaboration through potential food councils or hubs, and sustained government support to build capacity and address poverty-driven food insecurity. Overall, the research underscores that achieving community-based food security requires coordinated, culturally sensitive, and well-resourced strategies that integrate local knowledge and political will.
