Abstract

Senate Republicans are faced with the decision of how loyal they want their next leader to be to Donald Trump following Mitch McConnell's announcement to step aside after the November election. The three most likely candidates to succeed McConnell are John Thune, John Cornyn, and John Barrasso, all of whom have endorsed Trump in his third bid for the White House. However, their ties to Trump vary, with Barrasso being an early endorser and Thune only recently endorsing him. The race to replace McConnell will also be a referendum on the GOP's stance on foreign aid and the importance of US alliances. [Extracted from the article]
