Abstract

This article examines the influence of Dark Triadic Leadership—comprising narcissism, psychopathy, and Machiavellianism—on post-colonial African leadership and its impact on peace, development, and governance. Through analysis of historical and contemporary African leaders such as Mobutu Sese Seko, Idi Amin, and Yahya Jammeh, the study highlights how these personality traits have contributed to authoritarianism, corruption, human rights abuses, economic decline, and social fragmentation. It also acknowledges instances where assertive leadership traits positively fostered national unity and development, as seen in leaders like Jomo Kenyatta and Thomas Sankara. The article recommends strengthening democratic institutions, electoral reforms, civic education, ethical leadership training, and incentive structures for leadership transition as strategies to mitigate the detrimental effects of Dark Triadic Leadership and promote sustainable governance and development in Africa.
