Abstract
An essay is presented which explores the lynching and murder of the family of Elijah Moore of Dandridge, Tennessee in June 1854. Topics discussed include the alleged involvement of an enslaved African American man in the killing, the newspaper coverage of the case and other violent incidents in the Southern U.S., and the prevalence of vigilante violence against enslaved individuals in the antebellum period.
