Abstract

The article explores the ideological significance of the citrus fruit orange during the French Revolution and Terror of 1793-1794. Topics include a historical background on citrus trade in Menton, east of Nice in 1794, the identification of oranges with French Revolution leader Maximilien Robespierre who was known to have inordinate fondness for the fruit, and comments on the speech delivered by Robespierre to the National Convention on February 5, 1794 in which he justified the Terror of 1793.
