Abstract
This article systematically reviews 108 academic texts analyzing the coverage of *Jornal Nacional* (JN), Brazil’s leading TV news program produced by Rede Globo, across eight presidential elections following the country’s redemocratization from 1989 to 2018. It reconstructs a detailed historical narrative of JN’s electoral coverage, highlighting key moments such as the controversial edited broadcast of the 1989 Lula vs. Collor debate and the evolving media treatment of candidates and political scandals in subsequent elections. The review reveals a predominance of Portuguese-language studies with limited international visibility and underscores JN’s significant influence on Brazilian electoral politics, while noting shifts in journalistic practices and audience engagement over time. The article also identifies gaps in the literature and calls for broader, de-westernized research attention to political media coverage in Brazil and other Global South contexts.
