Abstract

The Maldivian government, led by President Mohamed Muizzu, has decided not to renew a hydrographic survey agreement with India, which has raised questions about the reasons behind this decision and the potential consequences for the relationship between the two countries. The agreement had previously been beneficial for mapping the ocean floor and promoting cooperation in the Indian Ocean region. Reports suggest that environmental concerns played a role in the decision, highlighting the delicate balance between economic development and environmental protection. The termination of the agreement could have geopolitical implications and may signal changes in how the two countries engage with each other. Despite concerns about diplomatic relations and regional stability, establishing a joint committee to address environmental concerns and explore alternative survey methods could help resolve the dispute and pave the way for future maritime cooperation.
