Abstract
This article investigates the challenges faced by women in securing and enforcing child support in India, focusing on the gendered dynamics within legal processes, particularly mediation. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork and interviews with litigants, lawyers, and mediators, it reveals how mediation practices often reinforce patriarchal norms by prioritizing fathers' visitation rights over financial support, pressuring women to relinquish economic claims, and perpetuating women's financial precarity. The study highlights that even women from privileged class backgrounds encounter systemic barriers, including non-compliance by fathers and institutional biases, which contribute to the persistent gendered wealth gap. It underscores the need to address legal, familial, and labor market mechanisms simultaneously to improve economic outcomes for separated and divorced women in India.
