Abstract
The article discusses the long-standing U.S. strategy regarding Russia's invasion of Ukraine, emphasizing that the goal has been to convince Russian President Vladimir Putin that his ambitions will ultimately fail. Despite years of conflict and significant losses for Russia, the article argues that Putin remains steadfast in his desire to reclaim Ukraine, driven by deep-seated beliefs and a refusal to acknowledge the costs of his actions. The author suggests that the West must shift its approach from seeking to deter Putin to a strategy of containment, recognizing that as long as he is in power, Russia will remain hostile. This new strategy involves increasing economic pressure on Russia and supporting domestic opposition to Putin's regime, ultimately aiming for a resolution that favors Ukraine and promotes democratic change in Russia.
