Abstract
This article provides a summary of several books on the Middle East. "Battleground: Ten Conflicts That Explain the New Middle East" by Christopher Phillips examines various conflicts in the region and the role of external intervention in these conflicts. "The Labor of Hope: Meritocracy and Precarity in Egypt" by Harry Pettit explores the challenges faced by Egyptian university graduates in finding employment. "Making Space for the Gulf: Histories of Regionalism and the Middle East" by Arang Keshavarzian offers a reinterpretation of the region's history and political development. "Mayors in the Middle: Indirect Rule and Local Government in Occupied Palestine" by Diana B. Greenwald discusses the difficulties faced by Palestinian officials in governing themselves. Finally, "What Really Went Wrong: The West and the Failure of Democracy in the Middle East" by Fawaz A. Gerges argues against attributing the failure of democratic politics in the Middle East to cultural factors and instead focuses on U.S. foreign policy as the main cause. [Extracted from the article]
