Abstract
This article focuses on the case of Frank Jang, a Chinese-born potato farmer in North Queensland, whose threatened deportation under Australia’s White Australia policy in the 1940s highlighted tensions within post-war immigration enforcement. Despite entering Australia legally in the 1930s under temporary exemptions, Jang faced deportation in 1949 after shifting from store assistant to farmer, a move prohibited for non-Europeans. Local farmers and community groups lobbied both the Labor Government’s Immigration Minister Arthur Calwell and the incoming Liberal leader Robert Menzies, whose government ultimately allowed Jang and his family to remain. The case illustrates shifting public and political attitudes toward non-European migrants, the role of regional communities in influencing immigration outcomes, and the gradual administrative reforms that preceded the dismantling of the White Australia policy.
