Abstract
This article investigates the moderating role of per capita income (PCI) on the relationship between energy consumption and poverty in Pakistan, using time series data from 1984 to 2018 and employing the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) technique. The study finds that both energy consumption and PCI are significantly and negatively associated with poverty in the short and long run, and importantly, PCI enhances the poverty-alleviating effect of energy consumption. This moderating effect suggests that increases in PCI strengthen the impact of energy consumption on reducing poverty, highlighting the importance of income growth alongside energy access in poverty mitigation strategies. The findings offer policy implications for Pakistan, recommending that efforts to reduce poverty should simultaneously focus on increasing per capita income and improving access to affordable, cleaner energy.
