Abstract
The article features finance professors' views on the 2023 banking crisis' causes as led by the Silicon Valley Bank (SVB). Bill Nelson observes that loses were due to longer-term fixed-rate assets, interest rates' rapid increases, and unstable funding. Charles Calomiris notes the U.S. policy framework failures in monetary policy, policy implementation, and bank supervision. Alex Pollack cites unwise real estate speculation, and the basic risk in lending money financed by riskless liabilities.
