Abstract

Burundi, the poorest country in the world, is experiencing a severe shortage of gasoline due to a foreign-currency shortage. Citizens are spending days and weeks in long queues at fuel stations, with some hiring people to sleep in their cars overnight to prevent theft. The shortage has been exacerbated by floods that have affected the country's coffee and tea exports, making it difficult to generate the necessary funds for importing fuel and medicines. Inflation has also surged since the Covid-19 pandemic, further impacting the livelihoods of Burundians. The government is seeking to increase coffee production and explore other avenues for generating foreign income. [Extracted from the article]
