Abstract

This article examines the integration of sustainable development within the World Trade Organization (WTO) framework, highlighting recent initiatives that reflect the organization's original intent to align trade with environmental goals. Key developments include the 2022 multilateral agreement on disciplining harmful fisheries subsidies, structured discussions on trade and environmental sustainability focusing on environmental goods and services, trade-related climate measures, circular economy, and subsidies, as well as dialogues on plastics pollution and fossil fuel subsidies reform. Additionally, the formation of a Coalition of Trade Ministers on Climate in 2023 aims to enhance international cooperation on climate, trade, and sustainable development. These efforts indicate a growing emphasis within the WTO on advancing a greener trade agenda amid global ecological challenges.
