Abstract

The article focuses on the design and evaluation of an educational vertical-axis wind turbine intended for domestic use in low wind speed conditions in Mexico. The prototype combines features of the Winside and Darrieus H-type turbines, using polypropylene blades with a more rectilinear curvature to improve performance at wind speeds as low as 2.7 m/s. A mechanical transmission system with a 1:4 gear ratio increases rotor speed from 12 to 48 RPM, enhancing voltage generation, with tests showing the turbine reaching 60 RPM and 3.10 V at 4.58 m/s wind speed. The project aims to provide a sustainable, functional model for teaching renewable energy concepts while addressing challenges posed by low and inconsistent wind resources.
