Abstract
The article focuses on recent rule changes approved by New Zealand's electricity regulator to improve hydroelectric generators' access to water during dry years. These changes to the Security of Supply Forecasting and Information Policy will be implemented before winter and aim to increase the amount of water that can be released without depleting lakes below critical levels. Since about 60% of New Zealand's electricity comes from hydro dams, the adjustments seek to reduce reliance on costly gas and coal plants during droughts, which in 2024 caused a spike in wholesale power prices and factory shutdowns. The changes modify how the buffer above critical storage levels is calculated, allowing for a larger buffer in winter, thereby enabling more flexible water use in dry conditions.
