Abstract
This article examines the United States' longstanding and complex relationship with Haiti, focusing on the recent threat to revoke Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitians living in the U.S. TPS, a program providing refuge to over 330,000 Haitians, was set to expire in early 2026 under the Trump Administration, which claimed Haiti was safe for return—a claim challenged by a federal judge's intervention. The article contextualizes this policy within a broader history of U.S. interference in Haiti, including economic embargoes, territorial claims, military occupation, and withholding aid, all contributing to Haiti's ongoing underdevelopment and instability. It highlights the moral and economic implications of ending TPS and underscores the need for the U.S. to uphold its responsibility toward Haitian immigrants seeking safety and opportunity.
