Abstract
Opposition groups in Burundi have criticized President Evariste Ndayishimiye's claims of increased prosperity in the country, stating that he is ignoring the deep poverty faced by most citizens. Ndayishimiye, in his state of the nation address, asserted that his government had overseen a thriving agricultural economy and that every mouth had food to eat and every pocket was full of money. However, opposition politicians argue that civil liberties are being suppressed while poverty worsens. Additionally, Burundi is currently experiencing a severe fuel shortage, with at least 20 traders drowning in a river while seeking fuel supplies in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
