Abstract

The article explores the advantages and consequences of a windfall tax on U.S. oil companies and the difference between reducing fuel costs versus disincentivizing oil production. Focus is given on the concern over potential war profiteering among oil firms. It raises arguments about the potential of a windfall tax to lead to higher energy costs, discourage investment in oil production, hurt domestic oil firms and make Americans more dependent on foreign oil and gas producers.
